I recently had the full-arch dental implant procedure done at Smith Dental, and I couldn't be happier with the results! From the initial consultation to the final follow-up, the entire experience was top-notch. Dr. Smith and his team were incredibly knowledgeable and caring throughout the process.

Perhaps it is my female instincts, but I love being with children and from early in my dental career, I realized that I wanted to work with children too. That’s why even though I am a family dentist, I limit my practice to children. Most child dentistry is provided by general dentists. Fortunately I had the opportunity work with Dr. Mark and learn how to give KIDS Great Grins in a pediatric dentistry office, with all the games and well-trained staff to support me. Watching little kids grow into young adults as they visit us a couple times each year is so very rewarding. Each visit is an opportunity to work towards a positive relationship and building trust. I also work with parents to help them make the right decisions for their children’s dental health, and sometimes we even compare parenting notes. I work very hard to meet each family’s unique needs and do what is just right for them, right here and right now.
I graduated from UCLA School of Dentistry in 1990 and first practiced at a VA Hospital in Long Beach, CA and then in a children’s clinic in Southgate, CA. When I finished my specialties in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, I moved to Portland to be closer to my wife’s family. Working with children and young people came early to me. I was a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts when I graduated from High School and one of my first jobs was as a pre-school teacher. After college, I became a middle school Science teacher and worked with tweens. Working with children of all ages before becoming a Pediatric Dentist and an Orthodontist gave me insights into child behavior that has been invaluable. Children see the world with fresh eyes and unique perspectives that always surprise and delight me. Each child comes in with their own excitement and their own concerns. The most rewarding part of my job as a Pediatric Dentist is when I turn a shy, worried kid into an excited and happy patient who is a little sad to leave and looks forward to coming back to the dentist. My career goal is to have children learn the skills to maintain and enjoy a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
Dr. Akbar Khan, D.M.D. is our newest member of the Great Grins team! Dr. Akbar grew up in New York City, NY and Norwich, CT and has very strong opinions on pizza and lobster rolls. He received his B.S. in Molecular & Cellular Biology and his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at the University of Connecticut. After graduating, he completed a one-year hospital-based residency at Harvard with a major focus on treating medically compromised patients. While in Boston, he developed strong opinions on clam chowder and cannoli. Dr. Akbar then moved to Minneapolis, MN to complete his pediatric dental residency at the Masonic Children’s Hospital where he was selected to serve as chief resident. In Minneapolis he gained a newfound appreciation for walleye and banh mi. He enjoys spoiling his cat, cooking/baking for friends (and the occasional foe), drinking espresso like water, sewing, landscape photography, woodworking, but most of all, he enjoys spending time backwoods camping and hiking in U.S. National Parks.
Growing up, Dr. Bell knew he wanted to either run an amusement park full of dinosaurs or become a dentist. Since discovering that Jurassic Park was only a movie, the choice was easy to make. Dr. Bell went to the University of Iowa for dental school, where he learned a lot about dentistry and also learned that he no longer enjoyed cold winters that last over six months. Attracted to the beauty and culture of the Northwest, Dr. Bell initially relocated to Seattle where he worked as a general dentist for two years. It was during his time in Seattle that Dr. Bell came to realize that he was much happier working with children. At the encouragement of a couple friends who were pediatric dentists, Dr. Bell applied to and was accepted into the pediatric dental residency at Oregon Health & Science University, which he graduated from in June 2019. Dr. Bell loves the idea of making the dental office a comfortable and fun place for kids. He enjoys being able to teach patients how to take good care of their teeth from a young age. This way patients can grow up avoiding problems with cavities and missing teeth that he saw in many of his older patients in Seattle.

Yes, it's fairly common for children to grind their teeth, especially during sleep, as a response to stress, discomfort, or as a natural part of their dental development. However, if the grinding is frequent or causing damage, it's worth consulting a dentist.
You can teach your child the importance of brushing by making it fun, using colorful toothbrushes or toothpaste, and explaining how brushing keeps their teeth strong and their smile healthy. Positive reinforcement, like praise or rewards, can also help encourage regular brushing habits.
Your child should use a fluoride toothpaste that is specifically designed for their age, with a pea-sized amount for children under 6, to help prevent cavities and protect their developing teeth. Make sure the toothpaste is safe to swallow, as younger children may not be able to spit it out.
We fill cavities in baby teeth to prevent pain, infection, and further damage, which can affect the development of permanent teeth and overall oral health. Healthy baby teeth also help with proper chewing, speech development, and maintaining space for adult teeth.
